Increasing clouds during the day with seasonable temperatures. A little light snow overnight. High 44. Low 30. Winds southwest 10-20 mph. Sunrise 7:52am. Sunset 5:12pm
The winter outlook for 2011-2012 is in and I am forecasting a longer winter than normal with slightly more than average snowfall. Even though we could see a few snow flurries in October, we will most likely see our first inch of snow on November 15. The Thanksgiving holidays will see some wintry weather with a significant snow that weekend.
The cold weather will continue through December with several snowfalls and below average temperatures for the last month of 2011. Most of the snow will be the result of low pressure systems originating in the Ohio River Valley. These snowstorms will produce several inches of snow with a high moisture content. The skiers will be happy to be able to ski by mid December with most locations in Michigan having sufficient snow. The Christmas holidays will be wintry as well with cold and snow during this period, as we will have a white Christmas. Temperatures in December will stay below freezing and we will keep our snow cover through the month.
The new year in January will pick up where we left in 2011. Temperatures will continue where we left off in 2011 which is a bit below normal. We will keep our snow and add a few inches to keep the snow plowers busy right into 2012. Beginning in the middle of January we will see signs of a mid winter thaw, as winter relaxes it's grip for the first time in more than a month. Temperatures will go above freezing as we lose most of the snow that we had built up so far this season. The moderation in winter will last one week to ten days with a day or two record warm temperatures in this period. This winter break will come to an end before January is done, which will crush any hope of an early spring.
February will start up where January left off with wintry weather which means regular snowfall, gusty winds and frigid temperatures. The Grand Haven gopher won't even be able to see the opening to his winter shelter because of the heavy coat of snow and ice on his front door. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like much melting or moderation for the second month of 2012. Even though February is the shortest month of the year, we can probably look forward to a "leap year" snowstorm on February 29, 2012.
March will roar in after our frigid and frosty February adventure. March is a long month which is good because we will see the snow taper off, temperatures warm up, and the skies clear with the advancing daylight. By the middle of March, we will get a couple of nice sunny days to melt the snow pack we had generated over the past 6 weeks. Lake Michigan will lose its ice by March 18 which is near normal. Spring will begin ontime, and for a few hearty souls both surfers and golfers will be able to start new seasons before the end of the month.
Overall, I am predicting 111.3 inches of snow for the winter season of 2011-2012. Our average snowfall is around 100 inches so we will be about 10% above normal for snowfall. Temperatures will average out to near normal with below normal temps in December and February, and above normal for January. Wintry conditions will extend from mid-November to Mid March with a couple weeks of a thaw in the middle to later part of January. Not a lot of fog this year, except during the mid-winter thaw in January. Icy weather may accompany the transitional period at the end of January as we cool down. Precipitation will mainly occur as a result of low pressure systems in the Ohio River Valley. Lake effect snowfall will not be as prevelant as previous years.
Make arrangements with your snowplower early and get onboard before the end of November, or you may get stuck shoveling a thick wet snow more than you like. Check with my friend Josh Casemier of Casemier Lawn Care and tell him you want the SurfGrandHaven discount for snowplowing.
